1.boil the rice taking care that the grains remains separated. 2.boil the split black gram with ginger and salt in 1 1/2 cups of water in an iron utensils till the mixture dries but is not over cooked. 3.heat the butter in a heavy bottomed pan; add the asafoetida and cumin seeds followed by the whole red chillies .fry over low heat till brown . 4.add the garlic .when it becomes light brown ,add the onions and fry till they become brown. 5.add the rice and split black gram .cook over a low flame till the liquid gets absorbed .serve hot, accompained by yoghurt.
