Directions | How to make Punukulu
Mix yeast in some warm water and keep aside for 5 min. To this yeast liquid, add both the flours with soda, salt, curd and mix with some water to a consistency like that of vada batter. Set it aside in a warm place for 6 hours. Then mix fennel and coconut pieces thoroughly. You can also add cumin seeds. In a deep pan add sufficient quantity of oil so that the batter when dropped in the form of balls will dip completely. Heat the oil to medium temperature and drop roughly round balls into it and cook on medium low flame till golden brown. Drain excess oil off these punukulu on a paper towel and serve with coconut, ginger chutney. Instead of self rising flour, you can use maida. Add 1/6th tsp of baking powder to maida along with the baking soda and you will need more salt when using maida when compared to self rising flour.
Recipe Tips
Do not add too much yeast, else it will not taste good.
