Rice upma is a very popular breakfast item in most of the south Indian homes especially in the state Tamil Nadu. It is commonly known as Arisi.

Ingredients used in Rice Upma
• Mustard seeds - 2 teaspoons.
• Oil (preferably coconut oil) - 3 tablespoons.
• For tadka: roasted cashew nuts - 10 number.
• Water - 4+1/2 cup.
• Curry leaves - 2 springs.
• Pepper powder - 1/4 tea spoon.
• Grated coconut - 1/4 tea spoon.
• Moong dal - 1/4 tea spoon.
• Raw rice - 2 cups.
• Urad dal - 4 teaspoons.
• Chana dal - 4 teaspoons.
• Green chilies - 4 number.
• Asafoetida - 1/2 tea spoon.
• Salt - to taste.
Method:
  • Wash Rice, pat dry with a clean cloth or paper towel. Then grind the rice in a mixer till the rice is broken into halves. It should not be ground very fine. It has to be coarse powder.
  • Wash Moong dal and keep aside.
  • Heat oil in a pressure pan (for tadka), add mustard seeds, chana Dal, urad Dal, green chillies, curry leaves, asafoetida and saute it.
  • Then add pepper powder, grated coconut, cashew nuts, rice, moong dal along with water and salt.
  • Now pressure cook as you do for your rice or cook till the rice is done.
  • At last,mix it once and serve it with coconut chutney or sambar.
