Swachh Ghar

Every thing about Swachh Ghar | Vahrehvah :

Nowadays you often hear from every second person talking about Swachh Bharat”, or on Television programmes, advertisements etc. Swachh Bharat literally means Clean India Mission which is a very popular national level campaign run by the Govt. of India and initiated by our Prime Minister, Sri. Narendra Modi.

The aim of this campaign involves: Construction of latrines, Promoting sanitation programmes in rural areas, Cleaning streets, roads etc, Eliminating the open defecation, Converting insanitary toilets into pour flush toilets, Eradicating manual scavenging, Complete disposal and reuse of solid and liquid wastes, Bringing behavioral changes to people and motivate health practices, Spreading cleanliness awareness among people etc.

This mission has an interesting theme of inviting nine new people by each and every involved people in the campaign and continuing this chain until the each and every citizen of India gets involved in this campaign. But one important factor that we all need to understand is that, we must firstly have a clean house which means have a clean environment with proper waste collection and disposal in and around the house and locality.

This is often seen as being the responsibility of the government or municipality. In many cases the municipality is unable to fulfil this role either due to financial constraints, lack of will or lack of organisational skills, then as an individual it’s our prime responsibility to follow organic waste reclamation process through community participation activities on a day-to-day basis. Organic waste recycling is a brilliant way of recycling your food and other organic waste that can produce both economic and environmental savings.

This method is naturally efficient, budget-friendly disposal alternative from waste management that can benefit your surroundings, community and the environment. Food and organic waste that you can recycle: Milk, juices and cartons Fruits and vegetables (peel, skin etc) Meat, poultry, seafood (bones and shells) Bakery items and ingredients Egg shells Dry leaves, cut flowers Paper towels, napkins Biodegradable waste is animal or plant matter that breaks down naturally with exposure to microorganisms, heat and oxygen.

Recycling biodegradable waste into a nutrient-rich, usable material is often called "composting." Composting requires that you follow guidelines to create a substance that can later be added to soil to make it better for gardening or other plant growth. It is important to determine the best way to recycle this type of waste according to your home or business requirements, where you live and your lifestyle. You can recycle biodegradable waste at home.

Waste recycling is an easy process. Dig a big compost pit in your garden area or community center. Organic kitchen waste such as leftover foodstuff, vegetable peels and spoilt or dried fruits and vegetables can be recycled by putting them in the compost pits. You could easily recycle and reuse most of the garbage generated in the household. Waste recycling has some significant advantages like:

  • Reduces environmental impacts arising from waste treatment and disposal.
  • Makes the surroundings cleaner and healthier.
  • Saves on landfill space
  • Saves money.
  • Can be used as fertiliser on farmland or in the garden.
  • Reduces the amount of energy required to manufacture new products.
  • Leads to less utilization of raw materials.
  • Improves the condition of soil.
  • Produce Biogas (which is created naturally by the decomposition of organic matter). Biogas can be used for production of heat and electricity.

Food is one of the most important necessities in our daily lives to survive. As we consume it every day, it is also the major source of waste. Excess foods like trimmings of meat and vegetables, cooked or uncooked leftovers, fruits and other edible matters generally come in small quantities but there is a huge contribution of such waste from various big establishments like hotels, restaurants, food stalls etc that add to the mix.

Now visualize how much of actual food waste we produce in a day. This only keeps adding up continuously every day. Just imagine where does all this waste go? Yes! it’s time to believe that every bit of waste is not worthless and we should find ways to make use of it in better ways and how it can actually help our environment perform the cycle of life. Hence a little time out and move ahead in creating a SWACHH GHAR with healthy environment around you. VahChef Sanjay Thumma
