If you are really bored of eating the routine bread toast and sandwiches, then this Bread Upma is an excellent and amazing appetizing dish influenced from the south Indian dish namely Upma. A very simple, healthy and delectable dish with excellent flavours mixed together to make the pieces of bread flavourful and yummy to eat. This is a very delicious breakfast that can be made in a jiffy with fresh or leftover bread slices.


Bread Upma is exceptionally made with pieces of bread sautéed in a mix of seasonings consisting of mustard seeds, cumin seeds, curry leaves, urad dal, flavoured with crushed ginger, spiced with green chillies and a dash of lemon juice to give a wonderful zest and tang to this simple but delectable dish. This is a simple, healthy and a light snack with fantastic south Indian touch. You could also make it healthier and nutritious to kids by adding small cubes of potatoes, carrots and green peas or any other vegetables of your choice. This dish is a brilliant substitute which can also be given to people who hate eating the regular semolina or rava upma.


Upma  is a very common yet delicious South Indian and Sri Lankan Tamil breakfast dish cooked usually with semolina (Bombay rava) and various seasonings added into and sometimes also added with vegetables depending on individual choice. Upma is known by various names in southern India such as uppuma, uppittu etc. There are a variety of variations that can be made for making the Upma. Upma can be made with vermicelli, durum wheat, semolina or pearl sago. Generally a wide range of vegetable is added into along with either cashew nuts or ground nuts that give a nice crunchiness to the dish.

How to make Bread Upma:


Ingredients:



  1. Bread                         -           5 pieces

  2. Cashew nuts            -           10 gms

  3. Cumin seeds            -           ½ tsp

  4. Curry leaves             -           2 springs

  5. Ghee                          -           2 tbsp

  6. Ginger                        -           ½ tsp

  7. Green chilli               -           4 nos

  8. Hing                           -           1 pinch

  9. Lemon Juice             -           2 tbsp

  10. Mustard seeds          -           ½ tsp

  11. Onion                         -           1 no

  12. Salt                             -           to taste

  13. Tomatoes                   -           3 nos

  14. Turmeric powder      -           ¼ tsp

  15. Urad dal                     -           1 tsp


Directions: Heat ghee in a pan and add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, urad dal, cashew nuts, curry leaves, hing, turmeric powder, chopped ginger, finely chopped green chlli, onion slices and sauté till the onions are translucent. Add little water, salt to taste, lemon juice and bring to a boil. Add tomatoes, bread pieces, mix and cover with the lid. Just cook for a minute. Switch off the flame and serve after a minute.


Tip: You can add roasted groundnuts instead of cashew nuts during the seasoning that gives a nutty flavor and taste. Use white bread or wheat bread to prepare Bread upma. Do not use milk bread as it gives a slightly sweetish taste to the dish. Bread upma is a quick meal to cook and can be eaten for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Do try this dish when you have left over bread slices or your kids don’t wanna eat a plain upma. Giving different variations using spicy seasoning will make the dish more delicious and flavourful.
