 Jowhar Halwa is an extremely rich, yummy and nutritious Indian sweet delicacy made with Pearl Millet flour commonly known as Jowari ka atta or Jowar flour that is nicely roasted in ghee (clarified butter) and cooked in milk, sweetened with mashed ripe banana and mix of jaggery and sugar, flavored with cardamom powder, garnished with nuts and raisins. Traditional village kind of sweet dish made with the combination of banana and millets. The taste of this halwa is exceptionally awesome, flavorful and aroma is just divine. The flour roasted in ghee offers a pleasant aroma lingering around which will surely tickle and allure your taste buds to salivate. The final product when cooked is appetizing, luscious as the dish has a nice shine, smooth and silky texture apart from its divine taste.


Recipe:  Jowhar Halwa



Ingredients:



  1. Ghee                                                   -       2 tbsp

  2. Jowar flour (Pearl Millet flour)  -       ½ cup

  3. Cashew nuts                                    -       6-8 nos

  4. Raisins                                              -       6-8 nos

  5. Milk                                                    -       200 ml

  6. Ripe Banana, mashed                  -       1 no

  7. Jaggery, grated                               -       ½ cup

  8. Sugar                                                 -       ¼ cup

  9. Cardamom powder                        -       ½ tsp


Directions:



  1. Heat some ghee in a pan and when it get hot, add pearl millet flour (jowar flour), cashew nut, raisins and stir well until the flour gets cooked in the ghee and get a nice sweet aroma.

  2. Cook the flour for about 4 minutes on a very slow flame and switch off the flame.

  3. Add little by little milk and stir the mixture continuously until the flour becomes into a nice smooth paste without lumps.

  4. Add mashed banana and mix well.

  5. Switch on the flame, mix grated jaggery, sugar and stir vigorously until the jaggery melts.

  6. Keep cooking and stirring continuously until the mixture become to a slightly thick mass and the ghee is releasing out.

  7. Switch off the flame. Add cardamom powder and give it a good mix.

  8. Scoop out little halwa and serve in a bowl garnished with a nut on the top.


Jowar is a gluten free whole grain popularly known as Sorghum. It is one of the important food crop in Africe, South Asia and Central America. Jowar is also called as Jwaarie, Jwari, Cholam, Jola or Jonnallu in regional languages and is the staple source of nutrition to many people living in the rural parts of India. For centuries, Sorghum flour has been the most important staple food for millions of poor rural people in the semiarid tropics of Asia and Africa and also remains the principal source of energy, protein, vitamins and minerals. 


Sorghum, like barley is extremely resistant to drought. It is usually grown in dry parts of the world. Sorghum is valued for, it’s a very good source of proteins, contains essential nutrients like iron, calcium, potassium and phosphorous. Sorghum is known to a heart healthy and rich in phyto-chemicals including tannins, phenolic acids and anthocyanins. Studies have shown that sorghum can reduce the risk of certain types of cancer in humans. The phytochemical levels are so high in this millet that they have shown potential usefulness in reducing obesity as well.


A main magical reason for sorghum flour to enter the healthy food trend is because it is gluten-free. Gluten is a protein found in many grains such as wheat, barley, rye and oats. While some people choose to eat gluten-free foods because of mild intolerance, this type of diet is essential for those who have celiac disease. Sorghum has a similar nutritional makeup to corn although it is higher in protein and fat and lower in vitamin A. Jowari ka atta or Sorghum flour is often used for preparing Indian flat breads like Jowari ka roti or Jowari Bhakri.
