Railway Mutton Curry  is  an  amazing meat curry, delicious, having distinctive flavors of its own, not too spicy and suits the palates of non-Indian aristocracy. This curry has a fantastic mix of whole spices added into the curry infusing the gravy with its essence into the potatoes and mutton along with few other spices added into. The curry also is added with little vinegar and tamarind juice to ensure that it lasted a couple of days.

Railway mutton curry looks to come to pass from the days of British Raj when most aristocratic travellers were travelling by train. This popular and slightly spicy dish was served in most Railway Refreshment rooms and on long distance trains along with Bread and Dinner rolls. Hence the curry was a fusion mix of Indian and Western amalgamation of ingredients keeping in view of the delicate palates of the British.

It is also said that Bengal being the stronghold of British rule was heavily influenced by English cuisine and Railway mutton curry being the most popular dish of that era, hence got its name because this dish was served mostly in the first class dining carriages those days. This dish is a classic meat curry with a blend of tastes, having distinctive aroma, cooked in mustard oil and the use of various spices such as black pepper, fennel seeds, whole garam masala, nutmeg and other Indian condiments cooked along with vinegar and tamarind juice to give that extra pungency. Railway Mutton Curry is best enjoyed with rice or dinner rolls.

Among the myriad prominent Bengali dishes, Railway Mutton Curry is one dish that never fails to impress anyone. It’s a finger-licking dish, velvety and luscious gravy and biting into the juicy pieces of the meat and potatoes is just divine as it burst out with exotic essence that will keep your palate crave for more. Mustard oil is one of the popular cooking oil in the cuisine of Bengal.

This oil is considered to be low saturated fat oil compared to other cooking oils. This is pungent tasting oil and is mostly used for cooking in various states of India like Bengal, Bihar, Orissa, Gujarat and Haryana. It basically consists of fatty acid, oleic acid, erucic acid and linoleic acid.It has antioxidant and cholesterol reducing properties and is loaded with essential vitamins. Railway Mutton Curry is easy to cook, appetizing and keeps your taste buds tickling with its explicit tang lingering around. You must try this dish if you really want to enjoy its taste.
