Description: Aloo Posto (Potato cooked in poppy seed paste) is a delicious & popular Bengali recipe generally eaten as a dry accompaniment with a meal of steamed rice and daal.

Recipe of Poppy seed potatoes Aloo Posto

Ingredient Name Quantity Unit
Potatoes 250 Grams
Turmeric 1/4 Teaspoons
Green Chilly 2 Numbers
Onion Seeds (kalonji) 1/2 Teaspoons
Oil 2 Tablespoons
Green Chilly 3 Numbers
Poppy Seeds 100 Grams
Jeera Powder 1/2 Teaspoons
Salt To Taste
Coriander Chopped 1 Bunch


  1. First soak the poppy seeds in warm water for 1 to 2 hours, make a paste of poppy seeds and green chilly. 
  2. Pour oil in a hot add kalongi, green chilly, turmeric, potatoes (boil the potatoes by adding salt, cook 70% done) toss the potatoes in the oil and add poppy seed paste, salt, add jeera powder, mix it well put the lid on cook for few minutes.
  3.  Heat mustard oil in a pan add chopped coriander leaves put this into the top of Aloo posto. 
  4. Serve this hot with ghee bhaat or Loochies.
