 In my quest to making healthy foods, this Oats Congee with Paneer is an extremely innovative type of a porridge or gruel or soup made with the goodness of oats and adding some foods rich in beta-carotene like  carrots, orange juice etc to make it healthy and nutritious dish to eat. Oat Congee with paneer is got subtle flavors from some of the best herbs and spices to make it taste good and light.


The robust flavors from dill leaves, sweet essence from saunf powder and heat from pepper powder is a brilliant amalgamation that adds the right amount of savor and zest along with a mild tartness from orange zest and ginger juliennes to the soup. This is a highly healthy nutritious soup that can be eaten which makes you feel full. The highlight of this soup is the goodness of orange juice that is a rich source of vitamin C and brings in unique taste to the soup.


Congee or Kanji Congee or Kanji as popular known in Tamil Nadu is a rice porridge made with plain rice. It is most often served with side dishes. You could also add additional ingredients such as meat, fish or other flavorings which can be eaten as a meal on its own, especially when one is ill and has to eat a lighter meal. Despite its many variations, it is definitely a thick porridge of rice largely disintegrated after prolonged cooking in water. The work Kanji is a prominent food of ancient Tamil people.


The English form Congee may have arrived in the language via Portuguese. Traditionally cooked Congee or Kanji is made with rice which is boiled in a large amount of water until it softens significantly. This can be made in a pot or in a rice cooker. In some cultures, congee is eaten primarily as a breakfast food or late supper while in others, it is eaten as a substitute for rice at other meals. It is often considered particularly suitable for the sick as a mild, light and easily digestible food.


Kanji or Congee is also prepared with different grains that include minor millet or pearl millet, finger millet, broken wheat, maize. Nuts and spices are added to the Kanji depending on the economic status or health requirements. In the state of Andhra Pradesh, this is commonly called as Ganji mostly eaten by the very poor people. Ganji mixed with buttermilk brings good taste also suggested by doctors for recovering the patient’s health.

Carrots' antioxidant compounds help protect against cardiovascular disease and cancer and also promote good vision, especially night vision. In addition, they are a very good source of vitamin C, vitamin K, dietary fiber and potassium. The nutritional value and health benefits of carrots make them ideal for Maintaining optimum health and Weight loss.


Paneer Paneer is fresh cottage cheese extensively used in Indian cuisine especially in north India. It is a homemade Indian cheese that is used in making different desserts, appetizers and main course dishes. Paneer is very versatile, soft and blends well with creamy sauces. It is usually served as an appetizer or accompaniment to a main course. It is moist and has soft crumbly texture. It has a slightly chewy consistency and mild flavour.


It hold its shape well and doesn’t melt, hence you can sauté it, grill or crumble/ grate and just do about anything to add in your dishes. Paneer also happens to be one of the easiest cheeses to make at home, requiring nothing more than milk and lemon juice. Paneer is one of the rich source of proteins for most vegetarians and are added to classic Indian dishes like kormas, curries etc.


How to prepare Oat Congee with Paneer:



Ingredients:



  1. Oats                                 -       2 tbsps

  2. Water                               -       as required

  3. Carrot, grated                   -       1 cup

  4. Orange zest, grated          -       ¼ tsp

  5. Saunf powder                  -       ¼ tsp

  6. Pepper powder                 -       ½ tsp

  7. Ginger juliennes              -       1 tsp

  8. Orange juice                    -       1 cup

  9. Dill leaves                        -       1 tsp

  10. Paneer, sliced                  -       4-5 nos

If you have not tried eating oats, then this is the best time to start eating and enjoy different flavours and its health benefits. Combine with a variety of vegetables to make a scrumptious congee or soups, upma or khichdi, or add in some fruits or nuts or spice it with little cinnamon and nutmeg which will give great flavors to your oats.
