Recipe of Udapi Style Upma

Ingredient Name Quantity Unit
Urad Dal 1/2 Tablespoons
Mustard Seeds 1/2 Teaspoons
Turmeric Powder 1/2 Teaspoons
Coriander Leaves 3 sprigs To Taste
Tomatoes 1 Numbers
Onions 1/2 medium size Numbers
Semolina/Rava 1/2 Cup
Green Chilies 2 chopped Numbers
Curry Leaves 4-5 Numbers
Sugar 1 1/2 Teaspoons
Oil 4 Tablespoons


STEP 1: 1. In a kadhai heat only about 2 tbps of oil. 2. Fry the onions till golden brown 3. Add tomatoes 4. Tumeric powder 5. Coriander leaves 6. Salt to taste. 7. Cook till tomatoes become soft. 8. Remove from stove and keep aside. 9. Keep 1 1/2 - 2 cups of water for boiling.Bring to a boil and turn of heat. Step 2 1. In a separate non-stick pan heat the remaining 2 tbps of oil. 2. Add mustard seeds and urad dal to it. Saute a little bit. 3. Add curry leaves & green chillies. fry them. 4. Add the rava/semolina and fry on a low heat for 15 mins. Fry well. 5. Once you start smelling the roasted rava add sugar to it. 6. Now add the mixture from step 1 to it. Mix well. 7. Then add the hot water and keep stirring till all the water is mixed in the rava. Cover on low flame for a minute. 8. Squeeze some lime juice and give it a stir. 9. Upma and ready and can be garnished with some chopped cilantro.
