Description: Unripe mango cooked with yellow lentil and given a tempering both south indian/ north indian style. This is a most common food item in the season and prepared in all homes.
Mango dal/ Mamidikaya Pappu is one of the popular recipes made with raw mangoes (green mango) which lend sourness and tartness to the dal that is very unique to enhance the flavor of dal.

Recipe of Mango Dal

Ingredient Name Quantity Unit
Oil 2 Tablespoons
Garlic 4 Slice
Curry Leaves 8 Leaf
Coriander Leaves 1 Springs
Cumin 1/2 Teaspoons
Gr Chilli 2 Piece
Unripe Mango 1 Large
Chopped Onion 1 Large
Turmeric 1 Pinch
Toor Dal 1 Cup
Salt 1 To Taste
Red Chilli 2 Piece
Mustard 1/4 Teaspoons
Hing 1 Pinch


  1. Heat oil in a pan add mustard seeds, broken red chilli and cumin. Add 4 sliced garlic and add chopped onion and saute for 2 min. 
  2. Add salt, turmeric very little turmeric, add gr chillies, curry leaves and diced unripe mango. Add water just to immerse cut mango and cook for 10 min till mangoes are tender but not fully cooked. Add boiled dal and water if needed check seasoning.
  3. Finish it with 1 tbs of ghee (optional) and coriander leaves enjoy this festive dal with rice.

Recipe Tips

Use lemon juice or tamarind juice if you like more sourness.

nice sanjay. could u suggest doing that with mamidi orugulu or aam chur available in market. coz its difficult to get unripe mangoes
