Oats & Coconut payasam is rich, creamy and extremely delicious to taste. Oats and Coconut Payasam is an exceptional combination of ingredients made with oats and freshly grated coconut which is sweetened, flavored with cardamom powder and garnished with nuts. This payasam is rich, creamy and extremely delicious to taste. It has a silky texture and alluring to see. The freshly grated coconut cooked with oats in milk gives a wonderful dense to the payasam apart from lending its rich taste and aroma.
Payasam is also known by various other names in India such as Kheer, Payasa, Payesh etc. It is an exotic and delicious rice pudding which is a traditional south Asian sweet dish. Most often, the payasam is generally prepared during festivals, special occasions, or religious functions etc. It is an integral part of the Kerala Sadya feast. There are several different kinds of payasam that can be prepared from a wide variety of fruits and starch bases.
Recipe: Oats and Coconut Payasam
- Oats - 2-3 tbsp
- Coconut, freshly grated - ½ cup
- Sugar - ½ cup
- Ghee - 1-2 tbsp
- Cashew nuts, pieces - 1 tbsp
- Raisins - 1 tbsp
- Milk - 2 cups
- Water - 1 cup
- Cardamom powder - ½ tsp
- In a thick bottom vessel, add some ghee and when it gets hot, add cashew nuts and raisins. Fry them until the raisins get puffed up and cashew nuts become slightly golden in color.
- Add oats, freshly grated coconut and mix well.
- Add milk, water and cook until the oats are done.
- Add sugar, mix and if required add little water to get the desired consistency.
- Add cardamom powder, mix and cook for about 3-4 minutes.
- Switch off the flame, dish out the payasam and garnish over with nuts.
